ItemA History of photography in Indonesia(Amsterdam University Press, 2024-01-03) Brian Arnold (บรรณาธิการ).As a former colonized nation, Indonesia has a unique place in the history of photography. A History of Photography in Indonesia: From the Colonial Era to the Digital Age looks at the development of photography from the beginning and traces its uses in Indonesia from its invention to the present day. The Dutch colonial government first brought the medium to the East Indies in the 1840s and immediately recognized its potential in serving the colonial apparatus. As the country grew and changed, so too did the medium. Photography was not only an essential tool of colonialism, but it also became part of the movement for independence, a voice for reformasi, an agent for advocating democracy, and is now available to anyone with a phone. This book gathers essays by leading artists, scholars, and curators from around the world who have worked with photography in Indonesia and have traced the evolution of the medium from its inception to the present day, addressing the impact of photography on colonialism, independence, and democratization.

ItemA museum in public : revisioning Canada's Royal Ontario Museum(Routledge, 2022-02-02) Susan L.T. Ashley.A Museum in Public critically examines the idea of museums as institutions of the public sphere. Using as a case study the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), Canada's largest museum, the book interrogates the public nature and political dynamics of the ROM as it completed a multi-million-dollar Renaissance' architectural project. Employing an empirically engaged cultural analysis of how publicness was reflected in the ideas, attitudes and behaviours of management, staff, and vis- itors, the book builds upon an ethnographic description of four public inter- faces of institutional operations: structuring, positioning, exhibiting, and interacting. Conceptualizing ROM's new nature as 'celebrity publicness': engagement as publicity and not politics, Ashley offers insights into how – and whether - museums like the ROM might achieve political publicness through transparent, open communicative action. As a whole, the book asks museum practitioners and scholars to seriously consider how the ideals of contact zone and engagement with their real need for dissent, conflict, and alternative ways of thinking – can truly be made possible within an administrative setting. A Museum in Public will be a unique resource for scholars and students around the world who are engaged with the ongoing process of democrat- ization in museums. Its on-the-ground reporting on practical organizational ISsues, offered in a shorter more accessible format, will attract and provoke museum practitioners.

ItemAbsence and Difficult Knowledge in Contemporary Art Museums(Routledge, 2018) Margaret TaliThis book analyzes practices of collecting in European art museums from 1989 to the present, arguing that museums actualize absence both consciously and unconsciously, while misrepresentation is an outcome of the absent perspectives and voices of minority community members which are rarely considered in relation to contemporary art. Difficult knowledge is proposed as a way of dealing with absence productively.

ItemArtefacts, archives, and documentation in the relational museum(Routledge/Taylor & Francis Group, 2022) Jones, MikeArtefacts, Archives, and Documentation in the Relational Museum provides the first interdisciplinary study of the digital documentation of artefacts and archives in contemporary museums, while also exploring the implications of polyphonic, relational thinking on collections documentation. Drawing on case studies from Australia, the United Kingdom, and the US, the book provides a critical examination of the history of collections management and documentation since the introduction of computers to museums in the 1960s, demonstrating how technology has contributed to the disconnection of distributed collections knowledge. Jones also highlights how separate documentation systems have developed, managed by distinct, increasingly professionalised staff, impacting our ability to understand and use what we find in museums and their ever-expanding online collections. Exploring this legacy allows us to rethink current practice, focusing less on individual objects and more on the rich stories and interconnected resources that lie at the heart of the contemporary, plural, participatory 'relational museum.' Artefacts, Archives, and Documentation in the Relational Museum is essential reading for those who wish to better understand the institutional silos found in museums, and the changes required to make museum knowledge more accessible. The book is a particularly important addition to the fields of museum studies, archival science, information management, and the history of cultural heritage technologies. -- Provided by publisher.

The essays are organized around two key themes that also serve as the publication's two openings: Ghosts, or landscaped haunted by the violences of modernity; and Monsters, or interspecies and intraspecies sociality.

ItemAs it were ... So to speak(Distributed for the Jewish Museum, 2018-04-27) Barbara BloomThe book features images of the museum’s galleries reconstructed as rooms in a fictive house—the music room, the boudoir, the analyst’s office—formed of objects from the permanent collection. These staged spaces are intertwined with fragments of text and images drawn from intellectuals, artists, and authors, both historical and contemporary. Ranging from the charming (Torah pointers tipped with tiny hands, poised above a piano keyboard; silver spice containers shaped like peaches and pears) to the poignant (an empty, worn velvet case for a shofar horn; a Nazi playing card created from a defaced Torah), each object is infused with profound significance.
